Beijing Children's Hospital (BCH) welcomed a delegation from Cancer Research UK (CRUK) on August 18 for an exchange on pediatric cancer research and innovation. The visit brought together expertise in cancer biology, therapeutic development, clinical studies and translation, with a focus on identifying areas of shared interest and potential collaboration.

The delegation included Dr. Iain Foulkes, Executive Director of Research and Innovation at CRUK and CEO of Cancer Research Horizons, CRUK's innovation and translation arm; Dr. Catherine Elliott, Director of Research and Partnerships at CRUK; and Meng Xue, Healthcare & Life Sciences Specialist at Scottish Development International, British Embassy Beijing. BCH Vice President Zhang Yizhuo joined the meeting, together with representatives from the hospital's research institute, research management office, biobank, innovation center and international office.

The discussion spanned childhood cancer biology and genetics, novel therapeutics, drug development and clinical studies. BCH shared its work on the mechanisms of pediatric cancers and new therapeutic approaches, as well as its clinical data, biospecimen resources and supporting infrastructure.

Dr. Foulkes outlined CRUK's approach to advancing new therapies for children with cancer, from understanding disease biology and identifying and validating new targets through drug development and clinical translation. Dr. Elliott provided further insights into CRUK's research strategy, funding and translational capabilities, including the C-Further initiative. The two sides also exchanged views on industry engagement and technology licensing.

Looking ahead, the two sides explored opportunities for continued engagement, including scientific meetings and seminars, visiting researcher and fellowship programs, and potential joint projects in areas of mutual interest.

The visit provided a clearer understanding of each other's priorities and capabilities and identified practical opportunities for more focused collaboration between BCH and CRUK.
